Homemade Spaghetti & Meatballs are something you need to know. They're perfect for summer family gatherings. They're perfect for that cold winter night where you need a warm food hug. They're perfect to impress that special someone. They're perfectโ€ฆfor well, everything. And you need to know how to make them. I know bestie, everyone (and their nonna) has a delicious version that's been passed down their family for eons. This just happens to be mine.

This homemade Spaghetti & Meatballs recipe is special. It's delicious, yes. It's easy to make, yes. It's probably one of two dishes most synonymous with Italian cooking in the world, yes. But it's more than that. It's a dish that's actually pleasurable to make. (Oh, and in case you were wonderingโ€ฆthe other dish most synonymous to Italian cooking is pizza!)

Spaghetti & Meatballs = Good Vibes

There's just something relaxing about the rolling of the meat, forming it into meatballs, and then letting them simmer in your homemade tomato sauce. I won't mislead you though, bestie. This is a recipe that takes time. So, here's what I want you to do. I want you to get everything ready on a Sunday morning - get out your favourite pot (mine is a French Oven by Le Creuset, a gift given to me by my parents shortly after my blog's first birthday two years ago), put on some mellow background music, get cooking, and let that beautiful mind of yours wander.

And should it happen to wander somewhere sad, or unkind; know that the world can end, and begin again in the morning. Besides, if you don't let your mind wander, how will it ever learn to find its way ย home?

โ€ฆOr you could just turn on the TV. Don't let me tell you what to do, bestie. It's your kitchen. You're the head rooster in here! (But seriously, set aside a little time. Most of it is going to be low effort on your partโ€ฆbut just know you can't run off until it's done.) Also, if you're feeling pasta recipes today, you might want to check out my Mushroom Pesto Pappardelle and Lemon Fettuccine with Garlic Shrimps recipes.

Just a quick disclosure, bestie. The link to the French Oven by Le Creuset above is an affiliate link. This means that if you purchase through it, I will receive a small commission – not enough to buy myself a purple unicorn, but enough to help keep my lights on. Thank you!

    Description

A delicious homemade Spaghetti & Meatballs recipe where we make the meatballs and tomato sauce from scratch. Easy to do, and delicious. This recipe is perfect for many occasions!

    Ingredients

    Units Scale

    For the Meatballs:

    • 1 Large Egg, beaten
    • 1lb Ground Beef (preferably ยฝ lb lean, and ยฝ lb regular or medium)
    • 1 cup Fine Bread Crumbs
    • 1 tbsp Dried Parsley
    • ยผ cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
    • ยฝ tsp Black Pepper
    • ยฝ tsp Garlic powder
    • ยผ tsp Paprika

    For the Tomato Sauce:

    • ยพ cup Chopped Onion
    • 6 cloves Garlic, minced
    • ยผ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • 2x28 ounce cans of Peeled Whole Tomatoes
    • 1 ยฝ tsp White Sugar
    • 1-2 bay leaves
    • 6 ounce can of Tomato Paste
    • 1 tsp of Dried Basil
    • Salt, to taste
    • Black Pepper, to taste
    • Chili Flakes, to taste (optional)

    Also:

    • Spaghetti
    • Parmesan Cheese, grated
    • Black Pepper, to taste
    • Fresh Basil, to garnish

    Instructions

    For the Meatballs:

    1. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix together well and roll into balls (I usually get around 12). Refrigerate the balls for 1 hour.
    2. Brown the outside of meatballs in olive oil in a large pot/crockpot over medium-high heat (weโ€™ll cook the insides later). Remove, set on a paper towel to drain, and set aside.

    For the Sauce:

    1. Sautรฉ onion and garlic in olive oil over low-medium heat in the same large pot (until translucent).
    2. Add in whole tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, parsley, and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper.
    3. (Optional) Add chili flakes to taste.
    4. Stir to combine and allow to simmer over low heat for 1 hour.
    5. Add meatballs to pot, gently stir in and reduce heat to simmer. Cook for 30-45 minutes, stirring gently occasionally.
    6. Stir in basil just before serving.
    7. Serve over cooked spaghetti, sprinkle on some extra Parmesan and black pepper, and garnish with a few basil leaves, if desired.

That is an appealing set of photographs, Riz – pasta is always appealing to me and describing the task the way you do makes me want to set aside time to do it again very soon – a glass of red wine in hand, of course. I love the process, too from preparation to plating. Thanks for sharing your special spaghetti and meatball recipe with all of us besties!

Hi Denise! Thanks very much! I always try to make my photos look as appealing as possible (some days, I have more success than others! :P). There’s actually a photo that I edited and then didn’t include because it was so divisive when I checked it with a few friends – some people found it dark, and edgy, and cool…others said the lighting made the spaghetti with meatballs look totally inedible! lol!

It’s easy to forget about a classic, but one of the best things is that they’re always there for when you remember them! I hope you enjoyed it!
