This super easy recipe is a perfect way to start the day. Orange & Honey Ricotta Toast is a sweet, but not overly indulgent way to start the day.

The first time I heard of a honey ricotta toast, I scoffed a little. Like it sounded fine, “basically cream cheese with honey” – but I really underestimated how good it is! Ricotta cheese makes for a perfect spread, while the drizzle of honey adds a lovely sweetness. This recipe ups the ante with orange slices (and some optional chilli flakes) to really boost the flavour profile!

    Ingredients

    • Bread (you can use whatever bread you like. I personally find sourdough a good option here.)
    • Oranges
    • Ricotta cheese
    • Lemon juice
    • Olive oil
    • Honey
    • Thyme
    • Red chilli flakes
    • Salt

How to make Honey Orange Ricotta Toast

Making this honey ricotta toast with orange slices is actually very easy to do (I mean, it’s toast!). Start by peeling and slicing your oranges. And then prepare the honey vinaigrette by mixing the lemon juice, honey, and olive oil.

Toast your slices of bread, and spread on a generous amount of the ricotta cheese. Next, top the ricotta toast with your orange slices. Drizzle the honey vinaigrette over the toast, and garnish with chilli flakes, thyme, and season with a touch of salt (flaky sea salt is the pretty option).

(If you’re not a fan of spice, skip the chilli flakes. It’ll still taste great.)

    Variation ideas

One of the best things about simple breakfast recipes like this is that you can create variations very easily.

Orange you glad you read this? Changing up the type of orange is an easy change that can make a big difference. I’d suggest opting for whatever your favourite kind of orange is – I’ve used blood oranges, navel oranges, and pink cara cara oranges! Alternatively, swap out the orange slices for another citrus fruit like grapefruit – personally, I prefer sweet citrus fruits, but you do you! (I’d avoid going with lemon slices though.)

You bread my mind! Next up is trying out different types of bread. I like sourdough, but French baguette, pumpernickel, or brioche works great too.

Go nuts. Sliced almonds make for a great nutritious topping if you want a little added crunch.

Spice up your life. Changing the herbs and spices can greatly impact the final result. If there’s a combination you like, give it a shot!

Something I’ve been wanting to try is whipping a little vanilla bean paste with the ricotta cheese, and possibly even adding a little orange zest or lemon zest into the mix. If you give it a shot, tell me how it went!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is honey and toast a thing?

Yup, bestie. It really is! And it’s marvelous.

Is honey toast good for you?

Honestly, this depends. Honey has a myriad of positive health benefits, but in excess it can be bad for you (it is an added sugar, after all). The type of bread you use can affect the health benefits of your toast as well.

However, in general – honey toast has plenty of healthy benefits when eaten in moderation with a balanced diet.
